NEET and NTA Exam Photo & Signature Requirements: A Practical Guide
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET (UG), JEE (Main), CUET and several other national exams. Their online forms share a similar style: a passport-size photograph, a signature, and for NEET, finger and thumb impressions, plus physical photos you must carry on exam day. This guide uses the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin as the example and explains how to get each file right at home. Every NTA exam publishes its own bulletin, and details differ, so always check the bulletin for your exam and year.
NTA ka bulletin dhyan se padhein – har exam ka photo aur sign ka niyam thoda alag ho sakta hai.
What the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin says
The bulletin lists these upload requirements:
| Item | Format | File size |
|---|---|---|
| Recent passport size photograph | JPG/JPEG | 10 KB – 200 KB |
| Signature | JPG/JPEG | 10 KB – 100 KB |
| Left and right hand fingers and thumb impressions | JPG/JPEG | 10 KB – 200 KB |
| Certificates (category, Class X, address proof etc.) | 50 KB – 300 KB |
For the photograph, the bulletin says it may be colour or black and white, with 80% of the face visible (without a mask) including the ears, against a white background – 80% of the image area should be the candidate's face.
You may see other websites quote a signature range of 4–30 KB for NEET; that number appears in older summaries. Go by the bulletin you are applying under.
Physical photos you need later
The bulletin states that the same passport-size photo used in the online form must be pasted on the attendance sheet at the exam centre and used during counselling and admission. It advises candidates to keep 6 to 8 passport-size and 4 to 6 postcard-size (4" × 6") colour photographs with white background. So before you upload, get prints made from the same photo file – and keep the file.
Preparing the passport photo
- Take the photo against a plain white wall in daylight, facing a window. Stand a little away from the wall so your shadow does not fall on it.
- Frame it close. 80% face coverage means the face fills most of the frame. Crop from just above the hair to just below the chin, with both ears visible.
- Keep it natural. No filters, beauty modes, or edited backgrounds. The bulletin warns that photos that look de-shaped, hand-made or computer-made can lead to rejection.
- Save as JPG and check that the size is between 10 and 200 KB.
Read photo background colour rules for help with getting a truly white background.
The signature
Sign in running hand (not capital letters) with a black pen on white paper. Photograph or scan it, crop tightly, and increase contrast so the paper is white and the ink dark. A 10–100 KB range is generous; the main risk is a blurred or grey image, not the size. See how to make a signature look clean.
Finger and thumb impressions
Use a stamp pad and plain white paper. Press each finger once, firmly, and lift straight up. Too much ink gives a black blob; too little gives a faint print. Make a few attempts and choose the clearest. If the form asks for one image with all fingers of a hand, arrange the impressions neatly in a row and photograph the whole set in even light.
PDF certificates
Certificates go as PDFs between 50 and 300 KB. Phone scanner apps can save directly as PDF; choose a "document" filter and a medium quality setting. If the PDF is too large, scan in greyscale or reduce the resolution a little. Make sure every word stays readable.
Common mistakes with NTA forms
- Uploading a selfie with a cluttered room in the background.
- Photo with a cap, mask or dark glasses.
- Face too small in the frame – not meeting the 80% coverage.
- Using a different photo for prints than the one uploaded.
- Signature in capital letters or in blue ink when black is asked.
- Low-light phone photos that look grainy after compression.

For schools and coaching centres
When many students apply together, collect photos and signatures on a printed sheet with a numbered box for each student, scan the sheets, and use Crop Desk to split them into 1_photo.jpg, 1_sign.jpg and so on. Everything is processed inside the browser; the images are not uploaded to our server. The guide on bulk cropping a sheet of photos shows the full workflow.
